We slam aggressive marketing which leaves young drivers in debt

Reports of young motorists being pressured into leasing brand new cars when they cannot afford the monthly payments, have been hitting the headlines in recent weeks.

A recent undercover investigation by the Daily Mail revealed that drivers on low wages, some with poor credit histories and even some without a job, are being offered top brand cars worth up to £20,000 – for no deposit.

The Mail’s exposé claimed that in their hurry to secure business, reckless sales staff at dealerships across the UK are failing to carry out full affordability checks and trying to get drivers to over-commit on Personal Contract Purchase (“PCP”) deals.

As a company which is committed to meeting leasing industry standards, we are against any form of pressure selling and always ensure our customers can comfortably afford the car they plan to lease.Simon Hill, Total Motion’s managing director voiced his concern:

It is disturbing to learn that young motorists are being tempted into taking out agreements that will leave them with levels of debt that they simply can’t service."

As a leading vehicle management business, we have a highly responsible attitude to leasing contracts and ensuring the affordability of our vehicles. We always take the time to get to know our customers before entering into any financial arrangements with them.

"Our approach fosters strong relationships, resulting in repeat business and customer loyalty. We don’t get involved in aggressive marketing or pushy sales techniques and we don’t do zero deposit deals for the general public.

According to the Daily Mail, undercover reporters visited 22 dealerships in England and Scotland, claiming to be in their early twenties and out of work, in poorly paid jobs or trying to purchase a car despite having poor credit rating.

Around half of the dealers they visited – including ones selling Audis, Mazdas, Suzukis, Fords, Vauxhalls and Seats – told them they could have a brand new car without paying any money up front.

Hi Emma, just want to thank you for everything you did sorting out our new cars, we took delivery today and there great. The whole thing from 1st speaking to you on the phone 6 weeks ago has gone brilliantly without fuss, great communication from everyone involved along the way. I will definitely recommend Total Motion to friends and hopefully being getting in touch myself in 3 years to go through it again with new vehicles. Many thanks again, Lee

Thank you for managing to find a physical car with the exact specifications my wife wanted, something no other company could achieve. Also, for having patience with a very awkward and hard to please customer! Can't recommend this company highly enough! Fantastic from beginning to end.

Dear Marvin,

Thank you so much for your exceptional efforts to ensure that I received my car today. I know that it was a tall order but I am very pleased and all went according to plan today.

I know that people often don't seem to appreciate all the work that people put into these things but please believe me when I say that I am very, very grateful.

If you have a manager that you can pass this message on to, please do so - in this day and age people always forget to say when service is good.

Thank you so much.
